Welsh-language requests
Public bodies subject to the Welsh Language Standards must answer correspondence received in Welsh in Welsh, and must not treat it less favourably — including by taking longer. A SAR written in Welsh therefore needs a Welsh-language response, and the timetable must allow for translation without eating into the statutory deadline.
The disclosed records themselves are provided as they are held; you are not generally expected to translate existing documents. It is the correspondence around the response — the covering letter, explanations of redactions and the redaction schedule — that should follow the Standards.
NHS Wales health boards
Health services in Wales are delivered through seven local health boards and a number of NHS trusts. Records requests from patients and staff follow UK GDPR, with the serious harm test for health data applied only by or with an appropriate health professional. Cross-border organisations
Organisations operating on both sides of the border — common in housing, health and education — may be covered by the Welsh Language Standards for their Welsh operations but not their English ones. Knowing which part of the organisation holds the data, and which rules apply to its correspondence, avoids inconsistent responses.

Do we need to reply in Welsh to a SAR written in Welsh?
If your organisation is subject to the Welsh Language Standards, yes — correspondence received in Welsh must be answered in Welsh, and not more slowly than English correspondence.
Do we have to translate the records we disclose?
